Artist Statement

Painting
My paintings often expresses a critical view of the way that our culture attempts to deny aspects of reality: death, decay, crime. This is why I refuse to describe death-related works as “morbid;” “morbid” means “sick” and there is nothing sick about acknowledging reality. While some may feel that I spend too much time on this subject matter, I see it as a balancing act: others spend a lot of time on other subjects, I spend a lot of time on blood and gore. It all evens out in the end. To me, it is modern society’s way of trying to erase death, to make it always seem like an acute and even unnatural event, that is sick.

Drawing
Some have asked why I paint serial killers and crime scenes. If I paint a flower, no one asks me why. Again, this is because some subject matter is either viewed as off-limits, or it is seen to be “glorifying” criminal behavior. Acknowledging crime is not the same as glorifying it.
